The Church of the Annunciation is one of the oldest churches in Vitebsk. Built in the first half of the 12th century, it is a fine specimen of the ancient Russian architecture. Over the course of almost nine centuries, the church has been rebuilt several times. Partially destroyed during the Great Patriotic War, the church stood in a damaged state until 1961, when it was blown up by order of the city authorities.

In 1977, the surviving foundations and fragments of the masonry were conserved, and in the early 1990s, the restoration of the church began. In 1998, the Church of the Annunciation was restored back to its original, most ancient shape. For a quarter of a century it has been a landmark of the city.
