Belarus’ self-sufficiency in staple foods exceeds 100%

MINSK, 13 December (BelTA) – The level of Belarus’ self-sufficiency in staple foods exceeds 100%, the Economy Ministry told BelTA with reference to the Economic Research Institute data.

According to the Research Institute, in 1993-2022 Belarus increased grain production by 20.3%, milk — by 33.7%, and meat — by 5.1%. Thanks to the comprehensive modernization and technical re-equipment of agricultural organizations, labor productivity in the industry increased more than 19 times.

The country has achieved the highest level of food self-sufficiency in the EAEU, reaching 96%. For some groups of products it is much higher: dairy products — 266.9%, vegetable oil — 220%, sugar — 141%, meat — 133.2%, eggs — 125.6%, potatoes — 112.3%.

Per capita agricultural production in Belarus is on par with the level of developed countries and exceeds the CIS indicators in many positions. Per capita production in 2022 was 943kg of grain, 418kg of potatoes, 310kg of vegetables, 853kg of milk (one of the world’s highest indicators), 132kg of meat, 375 eggs.

In the 2022 Global Food Security Index Belarus ranked 55th among 113 countries and was characterized as a state with favorable conditions for food supply.

In the global ranking of agricultural and food producers in 2022 Belarus ranked 6th in the production of skimmed milk powder, 10th – in animal butter, 12th – in potatoes, 15th – in whole milk powder, and 16th – in rapeseed oil.

Over 30 years the number of farms in the country has grown 4.7 times, and their share in the total volume of agricultural production soared almost 14 times.
