Minsk deputy mayor: Campaigning is banned during signature collection for candidate nominations

MINSK, 12 December (BelTA) – Campaigning is prohibited during the collection of signatures for candidate nominations, Minsk Deputy Mayor Artyom Tsuran said at a round-table meeting hosted by the BelTA press center to discuss the upcoming election campaign.

“The collection of signatures shall be held in places determined by local authorities. The Minsk City Executive Committee and other regional administrations plan to adopt the relevant documents soon. During the candidate nominations, signatures can be collected through door-to-door canvassing and in other non-prohibited places. The list of places where signature collection will be banned will be published,” Artyom Tsuran said.

The deputy mayor remarked that campaigning is prohibited during the signature collection. “Some potential candidates start campaigning even before their nomination is approved. Therefore, it is important to understand that during this period, signatures can only by collected through door-to-door canvassing or picketing, which is meant to give voters an opportunity to study information about potential candidates without campaigning. This period will last from 17 December until 15 January,” he added.
